Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations Office in Geneva Meets Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Addressing Internal Displacement

Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Abdulkarim Hashim Mustafa, has met at the representation’s headquarters, the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on addressing internal displacement, Mr Robert Andrew Piper.

The Permanent Representative welcomed the appointment of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General, Mr Piper, as an important step in unifying the efforts of the United Nations humanitarian agencies regarding the development of sustainable solutions to internal displacement.

The two sides exchanged talks about Iraq’s distinguished experience in addressing the internal displacement crisis, which led to a significant reduction in the number of displaced people from 6 million to less than a million distributed among the camps and host communities in Iraq. They highlighted the national plan to return the displaced to their liberated areas of origin which was launched by the Iraqi government, as it includes programmes and executive activities for the voluntary return of the displaced, the creation of infrastructure for the returnees, and other activities related to security aspects, the national reconciliation, rehabilitation and stability programmes, reintegration and community development. In addition to the formation of the higher committee for the relief of the displaced, headed by the Minister of Migration and Displaced, which includes 16 high-level government agencies that implements the aforementioned national plan.
