Canadian Foreign Minister to Iraqi Foreign Minister: Canada is Ready to Send Observers to Monitor the Progress of the Upcoming Electoral Process
H.E. Mr. Marc Garneau, Canadian Foreign Minister affirmed his country’s support for the electoral process and welcomed the UN Security Council’s resolution on sending observers to monitor the electoral process, stressing that Canada is ready to send observers to monitor the progress of the upcoming electoral process.
This came in a phone call between Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein and his Canadian counterpart, Mr. Garneau, on Friday 4 June 2021.
Mr. Garneau affirmed his government’s continued support and assistance for Iraq’s stability, and Canada’s role and contributions to the NATO mission and the international coalition against ISIS.
Noting the importance of the Rome meetings to be held at the end of this month, which will be attended by many foreign ministers of the member countries of the International Coalition to combat the terrorist organization ISIS, and to support Iraq’s efforts to eliminate the remnants of the terrorist ISIS; achieving a safe and stable environment that contributes to the return of all displaced persons to their cities of origin.
Mr. Garneau commended the important role played by the Iraqi government in seeking to bridge the gap in views of the countries in the region, including the Iranian-Saudi relations, noting that the Iraqi government played a pivotal role in resolving the crises faced by the region, and was an active element in achieving stability.
In another aspect of the conversation, Mr. Hussein expressed Iraq’s aspiration for more cooperation and exchange of expertise, as well as the need for communication and coordination in the international field on common issues.
In conclusion of the conversation, Minister Garneau welcomed the economic reforms undertaken by the Iraqi government, the vote on the budget law and the improvement of relations between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government.
