Ambassador of Iraq to Bulgaria Meets President of Sofia University
The Ambassador of Iraq to Bulgaria, Mrs. Lina Jalal Omar, met with Professor Anastas Gerdjikov, President of Sofia University, on 18 March 2021 at the university’s headquarters.
Mrs. Omar expressed her thanks and gratitude for the meeting, stressing her keenness to strengthen scientific and cultural relations between the two countries, and indicated the possibility of exchanging scientific expertise, visits and studies, and conducting training workshops for students and teachers through the work of its scientific twining between Sophia University and prestigious Iraqi universities such as Baghdad University and Al-Mustansiriya University or other Iraqi universities, in addition to the possibility of accepting Iraqi students at Sophia University in all specializations, especially medical ones.
Mrs. Omar also requested the possibility of facilitating the residency procedures for Iraqi students by granting them a one-time residency for the entire period of their studies or at least granting them a one-year residency, not to mention the routine procedures the students face when renewing residency, in addition to the issue of of unavailability of direct flights between Baghdad and Sofia, and many matters that burden the student financially.
Mrs. Omar invited the President of Sophia University to visit Iraq to get acquainted with the cultural and scientific monuments and the level of education witnessed by Iraqi universities, especially the old ones.
For his part, Professor Gerdjikov welcomed and congratulated her for assuming the position of Ambassador of Iraq to Bulgaria and her role in activating cultural cooperation between Iraq and Bulgaria, and expressed his readiness for this cooperation and explained that there could be cooperation with Bulgarian universities that have great scientific capabilities in Bulgaria such as the University of Plovdiv and the University of Varna, As for Sophia University, there may be joint cooperation with regards to engineering colleges or other disciplines. In addition to the possibility of cooperation to overcome the difficulties and obstacles that may face the Iraqi students in the future.
