The Chargé d’affaires and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in Geneva, Dr. Abbas Kadhim Obaid participated in the virtual meeting held by the Group of 77 and China at the ambassadorial level.
The meeting discussed financing for development, the debt challenges of developing countries in the context of the Coronavirus pandemic and the listening to the Chairman’s briefing on the arrangements for the sixty-seventh session of the Trade and Development Board, and preparatory procedures for the 15th UNCTAD conference that was postponed to 2021 as a result of the Coronavirus crisis.
The Chargé d’Affaires made an intervention in which he referred to the preventive measures taken by the Iraqi government to confront the Coronavirus pandemic, and expressed support for the Secretary-General’s call to UNCTAD, and the three proposed steps to confront the crisis and its implications for the economies of developing countries, stressing that Iraq, like most countries, was exposed to great financial pressures due to the drop in oil prices, and many sectors were affected by this decline, especially the financial resources that were allocated from the budget to face the pandemic and its consequences, considering that Iraq’s obligations in the economic and development sectors will be affected, and will also be reflected on other international obligations.
