Iraq and UNAMI Discusses Mechanisms for Handing Over Mission Headquarters to Iraqi Government

As part of the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2732 regarding ending the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) mandate, an Iraqi delegation headed by Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Bilateral Relations Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Bahr Aluloom, held a meeting with the Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs and Electoral Assistance Mr. Claudio Cordone, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Baghdad on 24 March 2025. As well the meeting was attended by a number of senior UN officials in Iraq.
The two sides discussed the mechanisms for handing over the headquarters occupied by UNAMI to the Iraqi government, as well they touched on the details related to the buildings located in Baghdad and other provinces, including technical and administrative aspects, in addition to setting timetables and procedures for the gradual handover. The meeting resulted in an agreement on a group of executive steps to ensure a smooth transition in accordance with the approved legal and administrative frameworks.
On his part, Special Representative Cordone and members of the UN delegation expressed their appreciation for the close collaboration provided by the Iraqi government in the gradual withdrawal of UNAMI, stressing the importance of continued coordination to ensure an orderly transition that preserves common interests.
From the Iraqi side the meeting was attended by Dr. Farhad Abdul Aziz Alaa Al Din Advisor to the Prime Minister, Major General Adel Reda Mustafa representative of the Ministry of Interior, Mr. Allawi Hussein Allawi representative of the Ministry of Finance, and Mr. Ahmed Jumaa Mohsen representative of the Prime Minister’s Office.
