Iraq’s Permanent Mission to United Nations Organizes a Celebration on International Nowruz Day

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, in cooperation with Permanent Missions of twelve Member States, organized a celebration at United Nations Headquarters on the occasion of International Nowruz Day. The celebration was attended by Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, a representative of United Nations General Assembly President, and a number of ambassadors and representatives of Member States.
The Representative of Iraq to the United Nations in New York Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, delivered Iraq’s speech on the occasion, in which he extended his sincere congratulations to the Kurdish people and all those celebrating this occasion around the world, noting that it reflects the spirit of brotherhood and partnership among the Iraqi people. He explained that Nowruz holds special significance in Iraq, as it does not only represent the beginning of spring but also embodies a symbol of the nation’s rich cultural diversity, adding that this holiday is celebrated in the spirit of permanent unity that defines our identity, and is a symbol of the triumph of light over darkness and freedom over oppression.
Dr. Obaid emphasized the importance of adhering to the values of peace, prosperity, and harmony among all societies, noting that Nowruz inspires building bridges of solidarity and the promotion of a spirit of tolerance and hope. He called for using this occasion to promote peace, understanding, and respect among peoples.
It is worth noting that the United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 64/253, declared March 21 as International Nowruz Day. In 2009, Nowruz was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as a cultural tradition celebrated by many peoples.
