Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Heads Iraq’s Delegation to Syria’s Neighboring Countries Meeting to Discuss Security Collaboration and Combating Terrorism

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein, participated in the meeting of Syria’s neighboring countries hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on Sunday, March 9, 2025. The Iraqi delegation included the Minister of Defense, Mr. Thabet Al Abbasi, and the head of National Intelligence Service Mr. Hamid Al Shatri, as well foreign ministers and defense ministers, Chiefs of Staff, and Intelligence heads from Jordan, Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon.
Minister Hussein affirmed that the meeting discussed collaboration mechanisms to combat Da’esh terrorism, and to build practical mechanisms based on the information available to the security services to combat the group.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the importance of civil peace and the necessity of the participation of representatives of all components in the political process.
In a joint press conference following the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, stressed that the continued existence of Da’esh poses a threat to the security of Iraq and the region, underlining the need for regional and international support in confronting it. In addition the Minister indicated the importance of exchanging information between Syria’s neighboring countries to combat the terrorist group, and the need to open a comprehensive dialogue between the various Syrian components to achieve stability in the country.
The Iraqi delegation participating in the meeting attended a meeting with King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II. The meeting emphasized the importance of maintaining coordination between Syria’s neighboring countries to address common challenges, especially in the field of combating terrorism and border security.
Following the meeting a joint statement was issued in which the participants confirmed:
Supporting the Syrian people in their efforts to rebuild their country, in a way that guarantees Syria’s security, stability and territorial integrity.
And considering Syria’s security and stability as a key element for regional stability.
Condemning the Israeli entity’s aggression on Syrian territory, and rejecting any attempts to intervene in Syrian affairs.
Condemning all forms of terrorism and cooperating militarily, security-wise and ideologically to fight it, and the creation of a joint operations center for coordinating efforts to combat Da’esh.
Working with the states of the region and the international community to create conditions that ensures the safe and sustainable return of Syrian refugees.
And agreeing to hold a second round of meetings in Türkiye next month to follow up on the implementation of the meeting’s outcomes and take the necessary decisions regarding them.
