Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Receives Special Representative of United Nations Secretary General for Iraq

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein received the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Iraq Dr. Mohamed Al Hassan, in his office at the Ministry’s headquarters, on Thursday 27 February 2025.
During the meeting Special Representative Al Hassan briefed the Minister on the work of UNAMI, and the steps taken to end the mission’s tasks by the end of this year based on the UN Security Council resolution issued in May 2024, which stipulated the withdrawal of the mission from Iraq by 31 December 2025, in response to the request of the Iraqi government.
Additionally, the two sides discussed ways to strengthen the relation with the United Nations and activate Iraq’s presence in the United Nations organs especially after Iraq assumed the chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China.
Minister Hussein commended the role of UNAMI, in providing assistance to Iraq over the past years and emphasized Iraq’s keenness to continue productive cooperation with the United Nations across various fields.
On his part, Dr. Mohamed Al Hassan expressed his appreciation for the constructive cooperation between the mission and the Iraqi government, affirming the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Iraq in its path towards stability and development.
