Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Delivers Iraq’s Statement at High-level Segment of Conference on Disarmament

Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Multilateral and Legal Affairs, Ambassador Shorsh Khalid Saeed, delivered the statement of the Republic of Iraq during the high-level segment of the Conference on Disarmament, held in Geneva on Monday 24 February 2025.

In the statement Undersecretary Saeed, renewed Iraq’s call to respect the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, stressing Iraq’s rejection of any calls or attempts aimed at displacing the Palestinian people, especially from the Gaza Strip.

Additionally, the Undersecretary underlined Iraq’s belief that the principle of multilateralism and collective security constitutes the basis for addressing disarmament and non-proliferation concerns, expressing Iraq’s aspiration for the Conference on Disarmament to restore its credibility by starting its negotiating mandate. As well the Undersecretary outlined the prominent role played by Iraq during its presidency of the Conference last year in promoting dialogue and building confidence among member states, which contributed to the adoption of decisions 2390 and 2391, which paved the way for the establishment of subsidiary bodies and the start of substantive discussion within the Conference.

At the end of the statement, the Undersecretary affirmed Iraq’s commitment to working with international partners to enhance efforts aimed at achieving disarmament and non-proliferation, which contributes to consolidating international security and stability.
