Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets UN Secretary General in New York
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein, met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations Mr. António Guterres, on the sidelines of his visit to New York on 13 January 2025.
The Secretary-General welcomed Iraq’s assumption of the chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China, and congratulated Minister Hussein on this responsibility, underlining the importance of the group as a strategic partner in supporting the agenda of the Summit of the Future, as Secretary-General Guterres commended its role in promoting sustainable development and enabling developing countries to achieve progress across various fields, he also affirmed the need to enhance cooperation between Iraq and the United Nations to address common challenges and enhance Iraq’s position on the international arena.
On his part, Minister Fuad Hussein extended his thanks to the Secretary-General for his constructive cooperation with Iraq, praising the efforts of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and its achievements during the past period.
During the meeting, the Minister provided a detailed explanation of the latest developments in the region, pointing to Iraq’s concerns at this stage, in addition he highlighted the need of finding urgent solutions to current crises to enhance regional security and stability.
On his part, Mr. Guterres praised the pivotal and regional role played by Iraq, especially with regard to developments in Syria, Palestine, and Lebanon, stressing his support for Iraq’s efforts to enhance stability and development in the region.
