Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets EU High Representative to Enhance Bilateral Relations and Coordination on Syria
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein met with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Ms. Kaja Kallas on the sidelines of the Riyadh Meeting on Syria which was held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 12 January 2025.
The two sides discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations between Iraq and the European Union as both sides expressed their desire to hold the Iraqi-European Joint Committee to deepen collaboration across various fields.
The High Representative of the European Union underlined the importance of enhancing communication and continued coordination with the Minister, especially with regard to the political process in Syria, as well she indicated the need to benefit from the Iraqi experience in this context, stressing the importance of continuing joint coordination in confronting Da’esh and addressing the challenges of the phenomenon of foreign fighters in Syria.
The meeting touched on the importance of launching a comprehensive Syrian national dialogue, as well as the planned national conference, and the role of the European Union in supporting all stages of the transitional process, from building constitutional institutions to achieving sustainable development and preparing the conditions for the return of the displaced people to their homes.
High Representative Kaja Kallas expressed her willingness to enhance cooperation and coordination with Iraq during the next stage, stressing the need to develop bilateral relations and hold joint meetings to achieve the common goals between the two parties.
