Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hold a Phone Call with his French Counterpart to Discuss Developments in Syria and Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein held a phone call with the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Mr. Jean-Noël Barrot, on 6 January 2025. During the call the French Foreign Minister reviewed the results of his recent visit to Damascus and his meetings with the political and security leaderships there. In turn, Minister Hussein briefed his French counterpart on the content of his call with the Syrian Foreign Minister.

The two sides discussed developments in Syria, and underlined the importance of agreeing on a shared vision to achieve stability in the region. As well they stressed the need to start a comprehensive peace process that ensures the participation of all components of the Syrian people in the political process.

Minister Barrot proposed holding a new edition of the Baghdad Conference as soon as possible in line with the latest developments on the international scene.

The call also touched on bilateral relations between Iraq and France, where the need to strengthen them across various areas was emphasized. In this context Minister Fuad Hussein invited his French counterpart to visit Baghdad, which was welcomed by the French Minister who promised to fulfill the invitation in the near future.
