Head of Europe Department Receives NATO’s Ambassador in Baghdad

The head of Europe Department Ambassador Bakr Ahmed Al-Jaff received NATO’s Ambassador to Iraq Ms. Juliette Gundy and her accompanying delegation at the Ministry’s headquarters in Baghdad, on 23 December 2024.

During the meeting, they discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Iraq and NATO and the mutual willingness to raise the level of this cooperation during the next phase. As well they touched on the preparations for holding the second meeting of the high-level dialogue between the two sides, scheduled to be held in Baghdad in 2025.

During the meeting Ambassador Al-Jaff affirmed Iraq’s keenness to continue its diplomatic efforts to enhance security and peace in the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of holding multiple meetings to ensure a dialogue that contributes to unifying joint efforts, he also pointed out the Iraqi government’s aspiration to build strong relations with its partners in the European Union and NATO.

The discussions also addressed issues of common concern, especially the future of relations with Syria and securing the Iraqi borders with it. In this context, Ambassador Al-Jaff indicated that Iraq has effectively enhanced its security measures on the border with Syria, underlining Iraq’s support for the stability of Syria and its continuous follow-up of the steps taken by the current administration there.

At the end of the meeting, Ambassador Gundy expressed her gratitude for the warm reception and the continued support provided by the Foreign Ministry to the NATO mission in Iraq.
