Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets his Russian Counterpart in Doha to Discuss Developments in Syria
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein met with the Russian Foreign Minister Mr. Sergey Lavrov in Doha, Qatar, on 7 December 2024.
The meeting discussed developments in Syria and the severity of their repercussions on the security of the region. As well both sides affirmed that Iraq and Russia are concerned with the Syrian affairs, and affirmed the importance of monitoring developments with great attention.
The discussions also touched on the outcomes of the tripartite meeting held in Baghdad, which brought together the foreign ministers of Iraq, Syria and Iran, in this context, the Russian Foreign Minister welcomed this meeting, adding that efforts should be intensified to spare Syria further tragedies.
On his part Minister Hussein pointed to the seriousness of the developments in Syria, and the imminent humanitarian crisis that may result from the related developments, whether through internal displacement or the flow of refugees to neighboring countries.
The Minister indicated that Iraq is striving to avoid the impact of the Syrian events on its security and stability. In addition Minister Hussein stressed that Iraq’s stance is to intensify efforts to confront any breaches or violations on the borders by terrorist groups, and that Iraq is interested in protecting its borders and the integrity of its territories and preventing Iraq from being pushed into being part of this conflict.
