Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hosts a Tripartite Meeting with Foreign Ministers of Syria and Iran

A tripartite meeting was held at the Foreign Ministry’s headquarters, on Friday 6 December 2024, which included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein, the Syrian Foreign Minister Mr. Bassam Sabbagh, and Iranian Foreign Minister Mr. Abbas Araghchi. The meeting dealt with security developments in Syria and their repercussions on neighboring countries especially Iraq.

At the end of the meeting a press conference was held, in which Minister Hussein referred to the bilateral meetings held by the Foreign Ministers of Syria and Iran with the President of Iraq Dr. Abdul Latif Rashid, the Prime Minister Mr. Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mr. Mahmoud Al Mashhadani.

 The Minister indicated that the main focus of the talks highlighted the difficult and dangerous situation in Syria, and the resulting security challenges that affect the stability of the region, stressing that the security of Iraq is linked to the security of Syria and the region as a whole.

Minister Fuad Hussein condemned the ongoing attacks on Syrian provinces and cities, which are carried out by entities that are internationally classified as terrorist, underlining the priority of protecting Iraqi territory from any threat and the necessity of keeping Iraq away from any terrorist attacks, in addition Minister Hussein indicated the pivotal role of the Iraqi armed forces in their different formations including the Army, the Popular Mobilization Forces, the Peshmerga in ensuring the country’s security. The Minister announced that Baghdad is exerting intensive diplomatic efforts to hold an international meeting in the Iraqi capital, aimed at reaching common understandings with representatives of the concerned countries, as well to hold another meeting at the level of the Arab League. 

On his part, the Syrian Foreign Minister affirmed that foreign interventions in Syria have become exposed and they aim to achieve historical ambitions, expressing his thanks to Iraq for hosting the tripartite meeting. In the same context the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi welcomed Iraqi initiatives and diplomatic and international maneuvers, announcing his country’s support for these efforts. As well he warned of the threat of Syria becoming a safe haven for terrorism, which would have serious repercussions on the security of the entire region, affirming Iran’s support for the Government and people of Syria in countering terrorist groups. 

At the end of the meeting a joint press statement was released that highlighted the current security challenges in Syria and their impact on the countries of the region, emphasizing the importance of regional and international collaboration to confront these challenges.
