Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets his Iranian Counterpart to Discuss Repercussions of Syrian Crisis and Enhancing Regional Cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein received the Iranian Foreign Minister Mr. Abbas Araghchi at the Ministry’s headquarters in Baghdad, on Friday, December 6, 2024. 

The meeting touched on the developments in the region, especially the situation in Syria. As well the two sides expressed their deep concern over the gravity of what is happening there, stressing that the expansion of terrorism in Syria poses a direct threat to the security of the entire region.

Minister Hussein affirms that Iraq supports all initiatives aimed at achieving balance and stability in the region, expressing his country’s readiness to provide all necessary assistance to contribute to achieving peace and de-escalation, the Minister added that what is happening in Syria directly affects the security of both Iraq and Iran, which calls for coordinating stances to ensure the security and stability of the peoples of the region.

Additionally the Minister indicated that the security of the region cannot be achieved by military means alone, underlining the importance of the role that diplomacy must play in addressing crises and establishing regional stability.
