Eighth Ambassadors Conference Convenes in Baghdad Under the slogan “Towards an Effective Diplomacy with Multiple Tracks in a Changing World”

The Eighth Ambassadors Conference started in Baghdad on Monday 25 November 2024, and will be held for two days under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and under the slogan “Towards an Effective Diplomacy with Multiple Tracks in a Changing World”.

In his speech during the opening session, Minister Hussein indicated that the conference is being held under delicate circumstances that the region and the world are going through, stressing the importance of Iraq’s diplomatic efforts in confronting security challenges and avoiding slipping into conflicts, emphasizing the need to give priority to diplomatic tracks to achieve stability in the region with a focus on critical issues, such as the Israeli aggression on Gaza and Lebanon.

Additionally the Minister touched on the Ministry’s efforts to enhance cooperation with regional and international partners to address common challenges, pointing to the achievements made through bilateral and quadrilateral understandings with countries such as the UAE, Qatar, and Turkey, in addition to agreements with Iran and Turkey, and other strategic files.

On his part, the Chairperson of the Preparatory Committee the Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations Mr. Mohammed Hussein Bahr Aloolum, stressed that the conference is being held amid serious political and security challenges facing the Middle East, especially the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza and Lebanon, expressing Iraq’s rejection for these violations, as well he called on the international community to assume its responsibilities in addressing these crimes.

Undersecretary Bahr Aloolum, also reviewed Iraq’s contribution in providing humanitarian and relief support to the Palestinian people through receiving wounded Palestinians in Iraqi hospitals, sending relief aid to Gaza, Lebanon and Syria, in addition to opening the doors to hosting the Lebanese, he underlined the importance of strengthening Iraq’s relations with neighboring countries and the world through high-level visits and strategic agreements in the security and economic areas. In this context, Undersecretary Bahr Aloolum affirmed the continuation of major projects such as the Development Road and understandings with the neighboring countries, in addition to strengthening relations with regional organizations, such as the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

The Undersecretary also explained the ongoing moves to end the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) in accordance with Security Council resolutions, stressing Iraq’s efforts to strengthen its position in the international community, including its upcoming presidency of the Group of 77 and China, and hosting the upcoming Arab Summit in Baghdad, as indicators of Iraq’s growing role on the international scene.
