Iraq Calls on Security Council to Take Strict Measures to Stop Israeli Attacks and Warns of a Dangerous Escalation in Region
Iraq’s permanent representative to the United Nations Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, affirmed in his speech at the emergency session of the Security Council to discuss the situation in Palestine and Lebanon, that the repeated meetings of the Council without achieving tangible results to stop the ongoing Israeli attacks reflect the international community’s inability to take effective decisions. As well he called on the Security Council to assume its primary responsibility in maintaining international peace and security by issuing binding resolutions for an immediate ceasefire and stopping military action.
Additionally the permanent representative indicated that the continuation of Israeli violations threatens to spark a large-scale regional conflict, which may destabilize the region and increase the suffering of civilians.
In a related context Mr. Obaid warned of the expansion of the war to include Lebanon and the assassination of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah reflects the intention of the Israeli occupation to ignite a large-scale regional conflict, which threatens the stability of the entire Middle East, in addition he underlined that this escalation may lead to international interventions by major powers, which further complicates the situation and exacerbates the humanitarian and political crises.
Iraq expressed its strong condemnation of the threats issued by the Prime Minister of the Israeli occupation forces’ against the countries of the region, considering that these inflammatory statements contribute to fueling conflicts and pushing the region towards more tension and wars. Iraq affirmed its full solidarity with Palestine and Lebanon in the face of these ongoing attacks and violations.
