Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Warns of Conflict Expansion in Region and Calls for an Immediate Ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza

On Thursday, September 26, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein participated in an interactive dialogue session at the Arab Summit Troika on Cooperation between the League of Arab States and United Nations, in New York, with members of the Security Council within the framework of enhancing cooperation between the two institutions.

Minister Fuad Hussein delivered Iraq’s speech during the meeting, where he stressed the seriousness of recent developments in the region, referring to the Israeli escalation on several fronts that could lead to the expansion of the conflict into an uncontrollable war, which threatens security stability in the region broadly.

The Minister also warned that the continuation of the war in Gaza and Lebanon will have serious consequences, as it may lead to creating chaos that supports the return of terrorism and the rearrangement of its ranks. Minister Hussein added that the continued displacement of citizens from southern Lebanon as a result of the ongoing attacks and bombing, will cause pervasive social and humanitarian problems in Lebanon and beyond, in addition to serious economic consequences in a region already suffering from many crises.

Additionally the Minister indicated that the continuation of this war will lead to its spilling into other countries in the region, expressing Iraq’s deep concern and its close follow-up of this situation out of concern that its effects will reach Iraq and the rest of the countries of the region.

At the end of his speech, the Minister announced Iraq’s support for the American-French initiative to achieve a ceasefire, calling on the Security Council to carry out its duties and take an urgent resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, Lebanon and the Red Sea, with setting a time limit to allow room for dialogue and negotiations.
