Iraq Chairs Plenary Discussion Meeting of Convention on Cluster Munitions in Geneva
Ambassador Abdulkarim Hashim Mustafa Permanent Representative of Iraq to UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva, chaired the Plenary Discussion Meeting on the first day of the 12th Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), held at the Palace of Nations in Geneva on 10 September 2024. This came after his election as Vice-President during the opening session of the meeting.
The meeting witnessed the presentation of national statements by several delegations of States Parties, in which they renewed their commitment to the objectives and principles of the Convention, and reviewed national challenges, concerns and activities aimed at achieving the goals for which the Convention was established.
Additionally, Ambassador Mustafa delivered Iraq’s statement, in which he emphasized the importance of the Convention and its vital and effective role in assisting communities affected by cluster munitions. He stressed the Iraqi government’s commitment to the objectives and provisions of the Convention, and its continued efforts to end the era of cluster munitions in Iraq, by removing and clearing the lands of remnants to ensure the return of displaced persons to the liberated areas, and resuming construction and reconstruction efforts in those areas.
