Chargé d’Affaires of Iraq’s Permanent Mission to UN Delivers Iraq’s statement at UNRWA Pledging Conference
UNRWA Pledging Conference was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, to provide financial pledges and support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, with the participation of United Nations Secretary General, the President of the General Assembly, UNRWA Commissioner General, and member states of the United Nations. The Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, delivered Iraq’s statement at the conference, during which he expressed gratitude to UNRWA Commissioner General Mr. Lazzarini, for his presence and briefing in which he conveyed the tragic picture, the extent of the suffering and the inhumane conditions the Palestinian people are suffering as a result of the crimes and war of genocide committed by the occupation forces, and his clarification of the financial crisis facing UNRWA.
Dr. Obaid stressed Iraq’s support for UNRWA and the importance of continuing its mandate and its humanitarian work by providing relief to millions of the Palestinian people over the past 75 years, and rejected the tightening policy practiced against the agency. He expressed his gratitude for the efforts and sacrifices of its workers, noting that the Government of Iraq made a financial donation in the amount of $25 million to finance its work and programmes, in addition to fuel, aid and direct humanitarian needs provided by the Iraqi Red Crescent to the Palestinian people, as well as its contribution to supporting the agency’s efforts. He renewed Iraq’s firm and principled stance in support of the just and legitimate Palestinian right to achieve its aspirations, restore its rights, and establish its independent state.
