Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Discusses Enhancing Bilateral Relations and Regional Development with Spanish Counterpart
On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, met with the Spanish Foreign Minister, Mr. José Manuel Albares, on the sidelines of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Summit, which was held in Washington DC, to mark the 75th anniversary of NATO’s founding. During the meeting the two sides commended the distinguished relations between the two countries, and discussed the task of NATO mission in Iraq, and the Spanish role within the framework of this alliance. The Spanish Foreign Minister indicated that the Alliance’s tasks at the current stage include the fields of security, combating terrorism, energy, innovation and climate, as well as other areas of cooperation, especially with the countries of the South.
Additionally, both sides affirmed the importance of enhancing economic relations between the two countries, and exchanging official visits. Minister Fuad Hussein, expressed Iraq’s welcome to the work of Spanish companies, and extended his thanks to his Spanish counterpart for his country’s recognition of the Palestinian state, calling for efforts to be exerted within the framework of the European Union and NATO, to stop the war and prevent the spread of the conflict. The two Ministers also expressed their concern about the recent escalation in southern Lebanon, and agreed on the importance of stabilizing the region, in addition, they discussed the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Mr. Mohammed Shia Al Sudani to Spain, stressing the importance of close cooperation between the two countries in the next stage.
