Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Receives Foreign Minister of Islamic Republic of Iran

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein received the Acting Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali Bagheri Kani, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Baghdad, on Thursday, June 13, 2024. The two sides held official talks on bilateral relations, and the efforts made in this regard, as well as the situation in the region.

During the meeting Minister Fuad Hussein affirmed that Iraq is looking forward to strengthening relations between the two countries across various fields, underlining that tensions in the region affect the internal stability of countries.

His Excellency also stressed that the relations between Iraq and Iran are based on the foundations of Iraqi foreign policy, which is building good relations with countries in the region and resolving problems through dialogue and negotiations, indicating that relations between the two countries are relations of common economic, political and strategic interests, in addition to geography and common history.

Additionally, Minister Hussein cautioned of the seriousness of the situation in the region and the risk of the conflict expansion which affects the entire region, noting that Iraq supports a ceasefire in Gaza, and wars in the region will negatively affect the countries, emphasizing the need for deliberations and understanding the countries of the region stances to reach solutions that lead to stability.

On his part, the Iranian Foreign Minister extended Iran’s thanks and appreciation for the condolences offered by Iraq through various figures over the martyrdom of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, indicating that there are common denominators that we are working to strengthen and develop.

Mr. Bagheri commended Iraq’s government wise stance over the war on Gaza, and the crimes committed by the Israeli occupation forces in the Palestinian territories, stressing that Iran has a serious will to exert maximum efforts with friendly countries and benefit from Iraq’s pivotal role in stopping the war on Gaza and delivering humanitarian aid. In addition, Minister Bagheri appreciated Iraq’s initiative in converging the views between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which resulted in restoring relations between Tehran and Riyadh.
