Ambassador of Republic of Iraq to Ankara Receives Turkish President’s Envoy for Water Affairs 

Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq in Ankara, Mr. Majid Al Lachmawi, received Turkish president’s envoy for water affairs to Iraq, Mr. Veysel Eroğlu, at the embassy building in Ankara, on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. During the meeting the Ambassador stressed that Iraq is looking forward to a strategic partnership and cooperation with Turkey, on water issues in a way that guarantees the rights of the two countries, underlining that the water file remains a priority in track of the historical relations between the two countries. Ambassador Al Lachmawi reviewed the Iraqi government’s procedures for implementing the agreements and memorandums of understanding signed between the two sides during the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Baghdad, noting that His Excellency the Prime Minister, Mr. Mohammed Shia Al Sudani, stressed the necessity of maintaining communication with the Turkish side by moving forward with implementing the agreements in parallel, in  addition to directing the ministries concerned with the memorandums of understanding to develop a clear plan of action under the direct supervision of His Excellency in order to speed up the implementation. Ambassador Al Lachmawie also indicated the importance of preparing projects related to water, which will be implemented jointly between the two countries, and focusing on strategic projects that are in the interest of Iraq in the long term, in order to achieve the desired impact on the agricultural and water condition in Iraq. 

On his part the Turkish President’s Envoy, affirmed Turkey’s readiness to cooperate with Iraq, and that its doors are open for dialogue and cooperation with the Iraqi technical committees concerned with water affairs, noting that the water file is a factor of strength between the two neighboring countries.
