The Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Permanent mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, delivered Iraq’s statement at the special session of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the resolution of recognizing the State of Palestine and grant it full membership in the United Nations, in which he indicated Iraq’s sponsorship of the resolution which was presented by the Arab Group, stressing the importance of the State of Palestine joining the United Nations and granting it full membership in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, stressing Iraq’s solidarity and support for the Palestinian cause and people, in addition to achieving their aspirations and right to self-determination, as well as establishing their independent state on the Palestinian territories with Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital, adding that obstructing the right of the Palestinian people to recognize their state and granting Palestine membership in the United Nations, contradicts with the legal and historical responsibility of the international community towards ending the occupation. The Chargé d’Affaires also affirmed Iraq’s position of disassociation from some of the phrases and terms included in the resolution because they are not compatible with Iraqi national legislation.
