Iraq’s Representative to United Nations Meets High Representative for Disarmament Affairs

The Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of Iraq’s Permanent mission to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhim Obaid met with Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, as an indicator of the efforts to strengthen Iraq’s relations with the United Nations in the field of disarmament, international peace and security. Mr. Obaid, highlighted Iraq’s efforts after 2003, to support multilateral international endeavors aiming to achieve a safe and peaceful world free of weapons of mass destruction, seeking to join all the relevant international treaties and conventions, as well as implementing their obligations, emphasizing Iraq’s stance on the necessity of achieving universalization of the relevant conventions and treaties, and implement their provisions, while noting the close collaboration between Iraq and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research UNIDIR, through organizing workshops aimed at building capabilities, technical cooperation, and cleaning up contaminated sites, The Chargé d’Affaires added that Iraq, exerted efforts and made accomplishments that led to assume high positions, by presiding several international meetings and conferences.

On her part, Ms. Nakamitsu welcomed Iraq’s efforts in the field of disarmament, including its effective role in supporting multilateral efforts at the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of nuclear weapons, expressing her aspiration for achieving a tangible progress during the forthcoming period.
