Undersecretary for Legal Affairs and Multilateral Relations and Director of Prime Minister’s Office Meet Head of the UN Investigative Team for the Accountability of Da’esh (UNITAD)
On May 26, 2022, Undersecretary for Legal Affairs and Multilateral Relations, Dr Qahtan Taha Khalaf, and Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, Judge Raed Jouhi, met Mr Christian Richer, Head of the UN Investigative Team for the Accountability of Da’esh/ISIS (UNITAD).
During the meeting, they discussed update of the work of the International Investigation Team in Iraq, in accordance with a mandate from the Security Council based on Resolution 2379 (2017), as well as mechanisms to facilitate its mission to ensure the success in bringing ISIS to justice and ensuring that they do not go unpunished.
The office of the Prime Minister was also briefed on the cooperation achieved between the Iraqi competent authorities and the international team, and the results achieved of the team’s strategic action plan which was jointly approved by the two sides, including capacity-building programmes and the definition of the crimes of ISIS in international forums as crimes against humanity, and genocide.
On his part, Mr Christian Richer expressed his appreciation for the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Iraqi national authorities in facilitating the work of the international team (UNITAD), commending the role of the Prime Minister’s office to support the team’s work, and realise the opportunity to hold this meeting.
