Iraq Participates in the Meetings of the United Nations Assembly on the Environment of the UN Environmental Programme in Its Fifth Session in Nairobi
On February 28, 2022, the United Nations Assembly of the Environment of the UN Environment Programme opened its fifth session at the United Nations Headquarters in Nairobi, to discuss the environmental issues that have a direct impact on humanity, the sustainability of the planet, the preservation and restoration of ecosystems, and finding the best ways to minimize the negative impacts resulting from the excessive use of plastics, nature-based solutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. These meetings coincide with the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Environmental Programme, which is scheduled to last until 4/3/2022.
During the meetings, the Iraqi delegation held a number of bilateral meetings with the delegations of the participating countries to coordinate positions, as well as with officials of the United Nations Environmental Programme and to introduce the initiatives and measures launched by the Government of Iraq for environmental reform, the revival of Mesopotamia, and addressing environmental challenges and climate change.
