Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs Receives Head of International Investigation Team on Promoting Accountability of the Terrorist Organisation, UNITAD

On Sunday, 30/10/2022, the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs, Dr Qahtan Taha Khalaf, received Mr Christian Richer, the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Head of the International Investigation Team on Promoting the accountability of “ISIS” UNITAD for its crimes committed in Iraq and the delegation accompanying him.

During the meeting, they discussed the coordination of current cooperation and activities carried out by the team, the matter of building cases related to crimes committed by the “terrorist organisation” and the capacity-building programmes provided by the team to Iraqi cadres, in addition to the definition of these crimes as international crimes.

The Undersecretary valued the international team’s efforts, confirming the importance of continuing communication and coordination with the various Iraqi institutions, in a way that contributes to facilitating and implementing its tasks and fulfiling its mandate based on terms of reference of the team.

On his part, Mr Christian Richard emphasized the continuation of the international team to intensify communication and coordination with the Iraqi competent authorities to implement its programmes of supporting local authorities to hold the terrorist organisation ISIS accountable, capacity building and the use of advanced technology to preserve evidence and archiving, commending at the same time the efforts exerted by the Ministry of Foreign Ministry and the various Iraqi institutions in facilitating the tasks of the international team and the success of its task.

They also agreed to implement some programmes in light of full respect for Iraq’s sovereignty and jurisdiction over the crimes committed in its territory.
