Minister of Foreign Affairs Meets High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union in Brussels

On 10/05/2022, The Foreign Minister, Mr Fuad Hussein, met on the sidelines of his participation in the Brussels VI Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union Mr Josep Borrell. During the meeting, they discussed the bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the European Union and ways of enhancing them, and the current issues on the Iraqi, regional and international arena.

They discussed ways to enhance the partnership and cooperation relations between Iraq and the countries of the European Union, where His Excellency stressed the utmost importance that Iraq attaches to the partnership and cooperation with the countries of the European Union and the steps taken to implement the partnership and cooperation agreement between the two sides, the importance of completing the meetings of the sub-committees, and Iraq’s aspiration to hold the meeting of the Cooperation Council on Ministerial level soon. The Minister gave a review on the latest developments in the political situation in Iraq and the efforts of the political blocs to form a new government.

The two sides also discussed the political situation on the regional and international levels, particularly the latest developments in the Russian-Ukrainian war. The Minister affirmed Iraq’s position calling for intensifying diplomatic efforts to find a political solution that is satisfactory to all parties as soon as possible. They also discussed the negotiations on the nuclear agreement between Iran and the six countries, and its positive repercussions on the security and stability of the region.

On his part, Mr Josep Borrell, confirmed the European Union’s continued support to Iraq, emphasizing the existence of strong partnerships between the European Union and Iraq, referring to the European Union’s commitment to provide support to Iraq and he aspires to continue their good relations.
