Ambassador of Iraq in Brussels meets Deputy Special Representative of Secretary General of United Nations and Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq (UNAMI)
The Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq in Brussels, Mr. Sadiq Al-Rikabi, received on 23/9/2021 at the Embassy, the Deputy Special Representatives of the Secretary General of the United Nations and Humanitarian Coordinator for the United Nations Mission to Iraq (UNAMI) Mr. Irina Voyashkova.
During the meeting, they discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two sides regarding sustainable development and the relationship of the United Nations Mission in Iraq with the European Union institutions.
Mr. Al-Rikabi reviewed Iraq’s efforts to achieve stability in service of sustainable development goals and challenges and obstacles it faces, especially the negative effects of Corona pandemic on the Iraqi economy and the rise in poverty because of incorrect policies that were committed in the past. In addition to the war launched by ISIS terrorist gangs on Iraq, many issues of common concern were also discussed, including the files of education, clean energy and the water crisis.
For her part, Mrs. Voyashkova praised the Baghdad Conference on Cooperation and Partnership and the approaches of the current Iraqi government, which she described as balanced and its ability to achieve the best relations with neighboring countries and the world.
She indicated that the United Nations development system in Iraq depends on societal cohesion, economy, governance, the environment and sustainable solutions.
She expressed her interest in resolving the issue of displaced persons inside Iraq in the correct manner, and demanded the provision of livelihoods, psychological and social support, and work to find permanent solutions for them.
At the end of the meeting, Ambassador Al-Rikabi stressed the importance of the United Nations support to Iraq internationally and regionally to achieve stability in it in preparation for attracting foreign capitals and investment.
