Minister of Foreign Affairs Meets with His Lithuanian Counterpart Gabrielius Landsbergis in New York

On Tuesday, September 21, 2021, the Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Mr. Gabrielius Landsbergis, on the sidelines of the work of the high-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly at its 76th session. During the meeting, they discussed aspects of joint cooperation between the two countries, and also the issue of Iraqi citizens inside Shelter camps.

The Minister stressed that the Iraqi government has taken all actions and measures to facilitate their voluntary return by issuing the required documents and providing special flights to take them back home and directing the concerned Iraqi missions to monitor this issue, and to conduct visits in these countries, adding that Iraq is keen to end this case file and ensure the safety and security of its citizens.

For his part, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister praised the spirit of cooperation and facilities carried out by the Iraqi government, and its serious and continuous interest in ensuring the return of its citizens from Lithuania, pointing to the Lithuanian national laws regarding illegal crossing of the borders exposing them to legal accountability. At the end of the meeting, the two sides agreed on the importance of exchanging visits between them to find appropriate solutions.
