Chargé d’Affairs of the Embassy of Republic of Iraq to Serbia Meets Director of Serbian National Museum

The Chargé d’Affairs of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq to Serbia, Mr. Haidar Rashid Swadi, has met Mrs. Bojana Brešković, Director of the Serbian National Museum, and Mr. Vladan Triagem, Head of the Department of Archeology at the Serbian National Library. They were briefed about historical metal coins and thin leather manuscripts, that were previously seized on the Serbian border during an attempt to smuggle them to Europe, which date back to the civilization of Mesopotamia stolen after 2003 and during the occupation of some Iraqi provinces by ISIS in 2014. The Chargé d’Affairs extended his thanks and appreciation to the Serbian government and authorities for preserving the smuggled Iraqi antiquities, stressing Iraq’s firm position in recovering all stolen antiquities, and recalling Security Council Resolution No. 2199, which obligates all Member States to return the stolen and smuggled Iraqi antiquities.

 For her part, Mrs. Brešković expressed the Serbia’s readiness to cooperate with the embassy to return all antiquities preserved in the Serbian National Museum.
