Foreign Minister meets his Iranian counterpart in New York and calls for the start of executive steps of agreements related to land and sea borders, and dredging the Shatt al-Arab stream

Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein met on Saturday, 25/9/2021 the Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Hossein Amir Abdollahian, on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York.

During the meeting, they discussed Iraqi-Iranian relations at various levels, and exchanged views on political and security developments in the region.

Mr. Hussein stressed that Iraq has provided all necessary measures to secure the arrival of the Iranian visitors to perform the Arbaeen visit. He expressed his hope to start the executive steps of the agreements regarding land and sea borders, and to dredge Shatt al-Arab stream.

He stressed the importance of the continuation of coordination of the technical committees’ meetings, pointing to the water problems that Iraq is going through due to Iraq’s failure to obtain its water quotas or the diversion of the course of some rivers, which has caused environmental and economic consequences.

The two sides praised the recent visit of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhemi to Tehran and his meeting with the Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi.

They also discussed the Iranian financial demands in return for buying gas and electricity in light of the economic sanctions imposed on Iran.

Mr. Hussein also stressed that Iraq proceeds in dealing with the political and security situation in the region in accordance with Iraq’s national interests, and this is shown in its keenness to establish peace and stability in the region, which was the main objective of Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership.
