Permanent Representative of Iraq to United Nations Office in Geneva as President of the Eleventh Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Cluster Munitions (CCM)

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Abdul Karim Hashim Mustafa, was elected as President of the Eleventh Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Cluster Munitions (CCM) for the period 2022-2023, and this came during the work of the Second Review Conference of the Convention held at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva from 20 to 21/9/2012.

In this regard, the Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations in Geneva delivered a statement in which he expressed his thanks and appreciation to the states parties for giving Iraq the confidence to assume this position, stressing that Iraq is one of the countries most affected by cluster munition remnants, and this nomination  is an expression of the commitment of the Iraqi government and national authorities concerned in implementation of the items and provisions of the convention. He also renewed Iraq’s aspiration to work objectively and constructively with all states parties, to achieve objectives of the Convention in accordance with the Lausanne Action Plan.

It should be noted that Iraq joined the Convention on the Prohibition of Cluster Munitions in 2013, and the number of member states to the convention is currently (110) member states. Since its accession to the Convention, Iraq has worked closely with state parties, international organizations and non-governmental organizations, to implement its obligations under the provisions of the Convention to clear all Iraqi territory from cluster munition remnants.
