During his Meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein Asserts Government’s Role in Resolving Crises Facing the Region

On 26 April 2021, Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein received his Iranian counterpart, H.E. Mr. Mohammad Javad Zarif, at the headquarters of the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baghdad.

During the meeting, they discussed strengthening aspects of bilateral relations and the importance of improving cooperation prospects in all fields to meet the ambitions of the two friendly countries.
The two sides exchanged visions and ideas on regional and international issues of common interest.

They also discussed developments in the region, the challenges it faces, and the need to support peace and stability through the efforts of the parties.
Minister Hussein pointed out that the Iraqi government plays a pivotal role in resolving the crises afflicting the region, and represents an effective element in achieving stability.
The Minister expressed Iraq’s vision of establishing balanced relations with the countries of the world based on the principle of preserving mutual interests, away from interference in its internal affairs.
He clarified that the negotiations between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran in Vienna have started, and that Iraq, in turn, is closely following these negotiations and is satisfied with their progress.
He noted that Iraq has very important economic relations with Iran that should be preserved, and problems that might affect the consolidation of bilateral cooperation between the two countries must be tackled.
For his part, Mr. Zarif expressed the condolences of the Iranian government for the Ibn Al-Khatib Hospital tragic accident, in which many citizens died, praying for mercy to the victims and a speedy recovery for the wounded.
He affirmed his country’s keenness to deepen the ties of relations between the two countries, expressing his appreciation for Iraq’s stances aimed at pushing forward the option of alleviating and avoiding escalation in the region.
He added that Iran respects the principle of good neighborliness and sovereignty, and non interference in internal affairs, and that relations with Iraq are strong, thus; his country looks forward to strengthening them in the fields of energy, railways and drug control, stressing that his country welcomes Iraq’s pivotal role in the region.
