Foreign Minister Receives Arab League’s Secretary-General

On 10 April 2021, Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein received Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States.
The two sides discussed the importance of strengthening joint Arab action and unifying stances regarding the challenges facing Arab countries .
Mr. Hussien affirmed that Iraq faces multiple challenges, calling for consolidation of Arab efforts to overcome them.
They also discussed the diplomatic means pursued by Iraq within the tripartite coordination mechanism among Baghdad, Amman, and Cairo, promoting common economics, and exchanging positions in support of balance in the region.
Mr. Hussien indicated that he briefed Mr. Aboul Gheit on the results of recent visits by Iraqi officials to some countries, including the visits by the Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Mustafa Al-Kadhimi to some Gulf countries.
The two sides discussed a number of important issues, most notably Iraq’s relationship with neighboring countries, as well as with Turkey and Iran, the issue of ending the Syrian crisis by resorting to dialogue and adopting a political solution that leads to stabilization, and the return of Syria to occupy its seat in the Arab League.
For his part, Mr. Aboul Gheit praised Iraq’s role in promoting joint Arab action, and confirmed that the League supports Iraq with all its aspirations, and that the League will host the Iraqi leadership soon.
Aboul Gheit said expressed to Mr. Hussien the readiness of the Arab League to assist Iraq in a way that preserves the interests of the Iraqi people, pointing out that within three months, the Iraqi leadership will be hosted in the Arab League to be briefed on achieved developments at the League’s headquarters.
