Ambassador of Iraq to Spain Meets the President of the Embassies Cup Foundation

The Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to Spain, Dr. Adel Mustafa Kamel, met with President of the Embassies Cup Foundation, Mr. Luis Alsina, and his deputy at the embassy’s headquarters, to discuss sports cooperation and joint coordination to enhance sports diplomacy between Iraq and Spain. The Spanish Foundation congratulated Iraq for the success of the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Iraq and expressed hope that this visit will contribute to achieving peace and stability, especially after the meeting of His Holiness the Pope with His Eminence Ali Al-Sistani. The President of the Foundation Mr. Luis Alsina also noted that the role and courage that Mr. Sistani has shown in fighting terrorism must not be forgotten, stressing that such a character is needed in promoting the culture of peace and dialogue.
The Ambassador explained the importance of the Pope’s historic visit to Iraq, and the nature of the official and popular reception which showed that the generosity of the Iraqi society extends in its historical roots. As for the Iraqi-Spanish sports cooperation, the ambassador stressed the importance of sports cooperation between Spanish sports institutions and the relevant Iraqi authorities, as Iraq constitutes a fertile and important environment for sports investment. his excellency also talked about the embassy’s work to follow-up the project of establishing a football school in Iraq with the Spanish Villarreal club through the Iraqi Ministry of Youth and Sports, and conveyed the Iraqi Minister of Youth and Sports Mr. Adnan Darjal’s willingness and keenness to cooperate with Spanish football clubs.
For his part, Mr. Luis Alsina confirmed the Spanish Foundation’s readiness to support sports activities between the two countries through joint coordination with the relevant authorities and his support for the efforts of the embassy to enhance the diplomacy of sports.
