The Representation of Republic of Iraq in Geneva: The Iraqi government places issue of displaced on top of its priorities and uses various capabilities to deal with it

The Permanent Representation of the Republic of Iraq in Geneva participated with a delegation headed by the Chargé d’affairs Dr. Abbas Kadhim Obaid, in the 71st session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (EXCOM 71) held in Geneva.

The Chargé d’Affairs delivered Iraq’s statement, through which he thanked the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Filippo Grandi, the staff of the High Commissioner for Refugees and the rest of the international, governmental and non-governmental humanitarian agencies, the United Nations, donor countries and humanitarian organizations in dealing with humanitarian crises in the world and called for support on humanity and service projects, confirming that the Iraqi government has placed the issue of the displaced among its top priorities, and has devoted all its energies and institutions to address it and provide the necessary assistance, and provided all kinds of facilities for humanitarian organizations, and set up full plans to control the waves of displacement.

Mr. Obaid stated that good planning with stakeholders resulted in achieving success in containing the crisis and avoiding its repercussions, as the number of displaced Iraqis decreased from approximately 6 million displaced persons to 800 thousand , he also confirmed that Iraq, despite the conditions it is going through is still a host country for refugees and asylum seekers from neighboring countries and the Middle East region, and provides them with assistance, although Iraq has not signed the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol.

Mr. Obaid stated that Iraq hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees from neighboring countries and provides assistance, shelter and relief to them, with the aim of alleviating their suffering and contributing to finding solutions for them.
