Dr. Abbas Kadhim Obaid , Chargé d’affairs of the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Iraq in Geneva, and Mrs. Michelle Bachelet, High Commissioner for Human Rights, placed a wreath of flowers on the memorial of Mr. Sergio de Mello in front of the headquarters of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva on the occasion of International Humanitarian Day, which comes in memory of the attack that had happened on the United Nations office in Baghdad on August 19, 2003, and caused the death of 22 UN employees, including Mr. Sergio Vieira de Mello.
The Chargé d’affairs gave a speech in which he expressed his gratitude for the efforts of all humanitarian workers who put their lives at risk in order to provide assistance stating that the targeting of the United Nations office in 2003 in Baghdad was the saddest terrorist act in the history of Iraq.
Noting that Iraq also remembers on this day the terrorist attack against the headquarters of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry in 2009, which caused the death and injury of a number of the ministry’s employees and expressed Iraq’s determination to work hard, to achieve all ambitions, and to support humanitarian efforts.
