Foreign Minister Calls on International Committee of the Red Cross to Cooperate with Iraq to End the Displacement Crisis

On the sidelines of the IISS Manama Dialogue meetings, Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein met with Mr. Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The two sides discussed the humanitarian situation of the displaced in the camps in light of the economic crisis, the outbreak of Corona virus, and the need to consolidate cooperation between Iraq and the Red Cross Committee.

Minister Fuad Hussein reviewed the government’s efforts in providing relief assistance to the displaced and alleviating their suffering as these efforts resulted in the closure of many camps, the return of the displaced to their areas of residence after liberating them from the terrorists, and the provision of a safe environment for them.

Minister Fuad Hussein called for the ICRC to play its role in monitoring the humanitarian situation of the displaced and providing them with the necessary assistance.

The Minister also touched on the government’s efforts to end the file of Da’esh children, return them to their countries, and coordinate with a number of countries, including Russian Federation to end this important humanitarian file.

As for the case of the wives of Da’esh terrorist gangs, the Minister expressed the Iraqi government’s interest in resolving this file after their criminal files were checked by the competent Iraqi authorities and pointed to the possibility of concluding an agreement with the International Committee of Red Cross for more coordination and cooperation.

On his part Mr. Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of Red Cross touched on the memorandum of understanding concluded between the ICRC and the Iraqi Ministry of Justice, and reviewed the efforts of the Committee in Iraq in the past period, praising the amount of support and coordination between the two sides.
