Foreign Minister Participates in Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region

Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein participated in the fourth Brussels Conference on supporting the future of Syria and the region, through video conference technology.

The Minister started his speech by talking about the extent of the damage inflicted on Syria by the conflict which took place ten years ago, and what the military solution brought of ravages and devastation of its cities and infrastructure, the number of civilian victims, and the displaced and refugees inside Syria and the countries of the world.

The Minister expressed the need to expedite the political solution because it is the guarantee to stop the suffering of the Syrian people, noting the necessity to combat all terrorist organizations without distinguishing between one and another, most notable which is Da’esh terrorist organization and its extremist ideology, explaining, the need to ensure that it does not return to Iraq again, hold it accountable for all the crimes it committed against innocent people which rise to the level of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

In his speech, the Minister also called for providing economic support to countries hosting Syrian refugees, noting the economic challenges and difficulties that Iraq suffers as it hosts approximately (260) thousand Syrian citizens, hoping for the continuation of the support provided to them by the international community.

Minister Fuad Hussein expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the United Nations in support of reconciliation in Syria, the support of countries in the region hosting Syrian refugees, the regional plan for refugees, and the ability to adapt to support humanitarian assistance to host communities in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt.

Minister Fuad Hussein warned that the continuation of the current situation in Syria constitutes a serious threat to Iraqi national security, including the risk of the flow of thousands of terrorists and foreign fighters into Iraqi territory which requires an urgent and speedy solution nothing not only to the problem of the displaced, but to the entire Syrian problem.

Minister Fuad Hussein expressed his hope that this conference will produce positive results that contribute to establishing peace and security in Syria and the region.
