The Iraqi Chargé d’sffaires in Geneva Meets Permanent Representative of Australia to Conference on Disarmament

The Chargé d’affairs of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in Geneva Mr. Abbas Kadhim Obaid met via video conference with Ambassador Ms. Sally Mansfield, Permanent Representative of Australia to the Conference on Disarmament as the third chair of the 2020 Conference on Disarmament.
During the meeting, views were exchanged on the Australian proposal to make the rules of procedure for the conference gender neutral.
The Chargé d’Affaires affirmed that Iraq does not oppose this initiative, provided that it does not lead to further changes, stressing that the Conference on Disarmament succeeded in negotiating and adopting many international treaties and agreements related to disarmament through the current internal system and the success of the conference depends on the availability of political will by the member states in the conference and not the internal system, indicating that the conference does not operate from a vacuum, but is linked to the international political and security environment.
The Chargé d’affaires expressed Iraq’s steadfast stance towards the work of the conference in particular that Iraq has been and continues to emphasize the importance and priority of nuclear disarmament as a basic step to achieve the goals of the conference, and return to its negotiating mandate.
