The Permanent Representative of Iraq in Geneva Meets Director of IDMC

The Permanent Representative of Iraq in Geneva, Ambassador Hussain Al-khateeb met in his office with Ms. Alexandra Bilak, Director of the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre in Geneva, where plans for future cooperation between Iraq and the IDMC were discussed and the exchange of experience in research and policy-making to develop sustainable solutions to displacement and reduce the risk of humanitarian shortfalls.

The Permanent Representative outlined the current situation in Iraq, the Iraqi government’s concern for the displaced and the humanitarian response plans, providing all forms of protection for them and finding sustainable solutions, adding that achieving sustainable voluntary return is one of the priorities of the Iraqi government’s program, highlighting the important role of the international community in providing humanitarian assistance to the displaced , demanding the continued support for Iraq in the international forums and create conditions for the return of displaced persons and the implementation of promises made in this area and to remind that Iraq has made many sacrifices to defeat terrorism.

The two sides also discussed the most effective ways to support the return of displaced to Mosul and other cities liberated from the terrorist gangs and to develop sustainable solutions that encourage displaced people to return voluntarily, including the provision of a decent and safe life in their areas of origin, and discuss coordination of positions to mobilize international efforts to support Iraq in the process. The two sides agreed that the issues of internally displaced persons should remain high on the agenda of international efforts, events to ensure that they receive protection and assistance.
