The Permanent Representative of Iraq in Geneva Meets High Commissioner for Refugees

The Permanent Representative of Iraq in Geneva Ambassador Hussain Mahmoud Alkhateeb met with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Filippo Grandi, at UNHCR headquarters, as part of the Permanent Representative’s courtesy visits to the heads of international organizations operating in Geneva.

After the exchange of compliments and welcome, the two sides discussed several important topics concerning the regional and international situations prevailing in addition to the situation inside Iraq and the challenges of humanitarian action and Iraq’s distinctive experience in dealing with displaced people and refugees in addition to stressing the importance of cooperation to address this issue.

The Permanent Representative expressed Iraq’s appreciation for the humanitarian work of UNHCR around the world, especially its efforts in implementing its humanitarian programs inside Iraq, which have effectively contributed to helping displaced people and refugees overcome their difficulties and alleviate their suffering and praised the coordination and cooperation between UNHCR and the central government which proved effective in the implementation of humanitarian plans at a high level of professionalism, in addition to discussing how to coordinate between the UNHCR and the Iraqi Representative in Geneva to mobilize international efforts to rebuild cities affected by the war against Da’esh terrorist gangs.

The High Commissioner thanked the Permanent Representative for the visit, noting the cooperation of the Iraqi Government with the UNHCR and other humanitarian organizations and the measures taken to facilitate its work in Iraq, praising the successful policy of the Iraqi Government and its experience in providing shelter for the displaced.
