The Permanent Representative Gives Iraq Speech in the Conference on Disarmament

The Permanent Representative of Iraq in Geneva, Ambassador Hussein Mahmoud Al-Khatib, gave Iraq’s speech at the Conference on Disarmament on 25/6/2019, reiterating Iraq’s firm positions on the four main issues of the Conference, stressing the importance of full nuclear disarmament as the top priority of the Conference, and their he continued presence is a threat to international peace and security.

The ambassador renewed Iraq’s support for the establishment of nuclear-weapon-free zones throughout the world, in particular the implementation of the Middle East resolution of the 1995 Review Conference on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Proliferation Treaty and in accordance with the Plan of Action contained in the Final Document of the 2010 Review Conference.

The Permanent Representative also confirmed his support for decision 73/644 on the establishment of a free zone in the Middle East, calling upon the sponsors of the Middle East resolution as depositaries of the Treaty to implement the commitments made in the establishment of the free zone and the implementation of the Middle East resolution.  The Ambassador also stated that the year 2019, is an important step to avoid the negative impact of this issue on the NPT Review Conference in 2020.
