Foreign Minister Mohamed A. Alhakim met with US Secretary of State Mr. Mike Pompeo at the Ministry headquarters in Baghdad on Wednesday, 9/1/2018 during which they discussed ways to enhance relations between the two countries and stressed the importance of achieving common interests in different fields in addition to discussing regional issues.
They also reviewed the recent developments in the fight against "Da’esh" terrorist gangs and joint efforts to eliminate the remnants of terrorism and strengthen security and stability in the border areas with Syria. Minister Alhakim called on Washington to cooperate to stimulate investment in Iraq and contribute to the reconstruction of Iraq, including cities liberated from terrorist gangs.
Minister Alhakim pointed out that Iraq adopts the establishment of distinct bilateral relations with neighboring countries on the basis of respect for sovereignty in addition to common interests.
On his part, Mr. Pompeo congratulated the Minister on the occasion of his assuming his duties as Foreign Minister and stressed the interest of the United States of America in stabilizing the situation in Iraq and starting reconstruction and investment as well as advancing bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States of America in addition to constant consultation on developments in the regional situation and on international issues of interest to both countries.
